Entry to the festival, hosted by Cycle Seahaven, is free. It starts at 10am and runs all day until 4pm.

Visitors will be able to have their bikes checked over for free, as well as having the opportunity of free demonstration rides on top quality road bikes, mountain bikes and electric bikes provided by Mr Cycles.

Cuckmere Cycles will also be present with an opportunity for younger riders to pit their skills against the cycle obstacle course.

Cycle Seahaven will be leading short rides suitable for families at 11am and 2pm, daredevil BMX riders can try their hand at the highest bunny-hop competition as well as taking part in a freestyle competition in the afternoon, and if you need a rest from that you can marvel at the penny farthings and boneshakers of the Veteran Cycle Club with riders in period costume. Theirs will not be just a static display – there will be regular parades throughout the day with expert commentary. There will be even more stylish riders on classic bikes as the Brighton – Seaford ‘Tweed Run’ rolls into town. Seaford’s Town Crier should feel right at home!

Home cycle mechanics may be able to pick up a bargain from the Cycle Jumble (£5/pitch, book in advance at Mr Cycles), or get expert advice from the local local businesses present offering such things as sports massage therapy, energy & nutrition, headbands, cycling GPS demonstrations and bike riding skills.

The 2nd Seahaven Cycling Festival will start off in grand style with the riders of the inaugural Seahaven 100 departing the festival site from 9am.
A few questions -
1) Is anyone interested?
2) If so, what do you want to cover?
3) when is best – after work (say 6:30 or 7pm) or at the weekend?

Some suggestions on content are:
a) Fixing a puncture (including how to fit/remove a tyre from a wheel without using tools)
b) setting up brakes
c) setting up gears
d) changing cables
e) replacing brake pads/blocks
f) …?

Let me know by reply to this blog or sending an email to us here with Workshop as the tite http://cycleseahaven.org.uk/contact/

Cycling is part of the designs, which is great news for kids and beginners, as well as raising the profile of cycling in general.

This is the email that got sent out to those that signed up for news -

Thank you to those who came along to meet the Architects last week. We have put the three design options on line for you to view. These are not the final designs. Please have a look and ‘mix and match’ the elements you like from each of them to help inform the master plan. The closing date for this phase of design is Friday 27th April 2012.

It is anticipated that the master plan will be completed by the end of June 2012.

On Saturday 17th March, 89 cyclists set off from the top of Ditchling Beacon to cycle the 20 miles off-road back to Seaford as part of a fundraising cycle for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. In teams of 5 , 6 or 7 riders, the competitive spirit was unleashed and there were some blistering times set. Unfortunately the weather was not kind and the fog and rain meant that at times visibility was only about 3m. However, the ground was good from the previously dry weather and each of the riders made it back to the Downs Leisure Centre, albeit after some punctures and technical hitches.

The fastest team home, aptly named “Are we at the pub yet”, made it back in 2 hours 1 minute, closely followed by last years’ winners, The Shoreham Trojans, in 2 hours 3 minutes. Third was the team from Mr Cycles in 2 hours 8 minutes. The majority of the teams were fun riders, some of whom are quite new to mountain biking. Many thanks goes to Rod from Mr Cycles who provided prizes to 1st, 2nd & 3rd teams along with energy bars for every rider. Thanks also goes to Sean Garrick who made a personal donation which covered costs of food and drink for the cyclists when they reached the Downs Leisure Centre.

A fantastic total of £2133 was raised for Cystic Fibrosis. Very well done to all involved.

Good news for local cyclists. The Lewes to Kingston route has been given the go ahead.

This has come as a total (but welcome) surprise to many people but it seems it’s the outcome of a ‘Linking Places Fund’ of £15m that Norman Baker announced in February to ‘encourage cycling and walking, to provide access to employment and reduce carbon emissions’. Half the funding (£8m) was given to Sustrans to allocate and they have picked up the Kingston-Lewes section of OVCN as one of the recipient projects. It has to be completed in a year and has been costed at £250k of which £150k is provided from government and rest from match funding by ESCC).

Here’s the announcement on Norman Baker’s website: http://www.normanbaker.org.uk/pr/2012/120308_cycle.htm

Cycle Seahaven and OVCN will still campain for the other arm of this route to be developed between Lewes and Newhaven.

A team of willing hands will be meeting at 9am on Saturday 3rd March in the Golden Galleon Car Park to carry out a further clearance of the pathway on Exceat Hill. If you have a morning free (or just an hour or so) and would like to help then please come along. It would be most helpful if you would confirm your attendance by contacting Denis at the number below. We will have some tools available but ideally you should come armed with your own shears or similar. Just a pair of gardening gloves will do.

Last year we made fantastic progress with this clearance, and we’re expeting to make a huge improvement this year. The work involves cutting the scrub back and moving it out the way. The aim is to get a wide and clear path for the use of cyclists and walkers. It’s amazing how much space there is along most of this hill. It’s great fun getting stuck in, and great so see the results afterwards. Just park at the Golden Galleon and walk up the hill to meet the crew.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Regards Denis Bass 07788 428082
