Your Committee (currently being updated)

Joanne Barlow

Back in 2014 I made a crazy decision to sign up for a cycling challenge.  To cycle London to Paris.  It was for charity but the mad bit was that I had not been on a bike seriously for years and only had 6 months to train.  I dusted off my old bike and then contacted Cycle Seahaven to see if they offered some rides that would help me get fit.  Not only did they offer a variety of rides but I was welcomed to the club with such warmth and the help and advice I received definitely helped me to achieve what most of my friends thought was impossible.

Being a member of the club not only helped me achieve my first cycling challenge, it has also inspired me to take on many more and I hope to continue with this in the future.

This along with the lifelong friendships made is what makes this club so special.

After my cycling challenge I became a Ride Leader, concentrating on beginner rides in the hope that this would encourage more people to dust their bikes off and get riding.

Having now been a member for over 6 years I feel it is the right time for me to support the club even more by joining the committee and taking on the role of Chair.

Vice Chair

Dave Sutton

I joined Cycle Seahaven in 2014 and regularly lead Road, Touring paced groups. I also lead off road rides such as the Tourers (S)off(T) road ride, which I am hoping to become a regular monthly easy paced off-road ride.

It was my pitch to the committee in 2016 that brought the regular monthly Dr Bike surgeries into the club, and I joined the committee in 2018 to assist ensuring that this great activity continues to run smoothly.

I have also been behind the Ride with GPS Club Account, knowing that being able to download a route and go off and have a cycle ride getting spoken directions will be of great benefit to the members.

I have always enjoyed cycling for the benefits of healthy exercise in good company, preferably with a café or pub stop during the ride.

I am also Secretary of the Phoenix-CTC, a cycle touring club which is a member group of Cycling UK.

Denis Bass

I have ridden a bike since I was a child, but it wasn’t until the growth of the MTB in the eighties that I found riding a bike so exhilarating and enjoyable. Even now in my retirement riding my bike is one of my top three activities that I enjoy the most.

In 2009 I joined the Cycle Seahaven committee at the formation of the club. Apart from 2020 when I stepped down from the committee, I have been involved with the club throughout.

I hope to be able to serve the new committee with my enthusiasm for cycling and pass on the enjoyment I get when being out in the great outdoors with like-minded people.

For those of you reading my “bio” I hope it gives you the same motivation that I have to get out, come rain, shine, night or day, enjoy our beautiful countryside open air and friendship that is part of belonging to Cycle Seahaven.

Vivienne McLachlan

This my second year on the committee and my first as treasurer.

I became a member of CSH after attending a few ‘Ride the Downs’ health rides last summer. At the time I had not been confident enough to head for the hills on my own. The experience of riding as part of a group was liberating, I learnt some new routes and felt supported. Having rekindled my love of cycling I hope to encourage and enable others get back on a bike and join a group ride very soon.

I hope to get the chance to meet a lot more of the membership on rides and events in 2021

Membership Secretary

Sarah Clark

I joined the club in 2018 following a visit to Dr Bike, Peacehaven.  Sitting at a desk all day, every day it was my intension to increase my activity levels and improve fitness. This remains work in progress!

Having been co-opted onto the committee during the 2019 season to shadow Denis, the previous Treasurer and Membership Secretary, I was voted on at the 2020 AGM.  I have some huge shoes to fill, but with the aid of Vivienne, I hope to continue the successes of my predecessor.

My aim for this year is to make the membership renewal process a little less time consuming.  I also look forward to assisting other members of the committee whenever and wherever the need arises.

You will often find me out with the Ladies or on the easier MTB rides.  I am yet to attempt any road riding.  If you see me on a ride or social event, please introduce yourself, so I can put a face to a membership number.

I look forward to cycling with you this season.

Dr Bike Team Lead

Lee Turner

I have been a club member for 4 year’s now and am now starting my 2nd year on the committee. I must say my first 6 months committee experience was not what I expected but I’m pleased that we are now moving in the right direction and look forward to working with the current and new committee members for 2021.

My first year as Dr Bike Lead for the club has been very positive despite the Covid pandemic. We now have a new home for Dr Bike in Seaford at the Salts recreation ground and have introduced a 3rd site at Paradise Park, Newhaven. We now also have a contactless payment machine for donations. I’m looking forward to 2021 and have further plans for Dr Bike.

The club members that have volunteered their time during 2020 to keep Dr Bike going and helping keep people riding during the pandemic has been amazing and I look forward to working with you all once we are allowed to resume normal service.

Dr Bike Assistant

Charlie Ireland

I have been a lifelong cyclist and regular rider. I ride MTB mainly but you will also find my wife and I on our tandem.

I have taken on the job of social media for the club, my goal being to get more interaction from a wider spectrum of members across the Facebook pages, trying to keep it fun light hearted and inclusive.

I will also help with Dr Bike, getting  people back into cycling as safely as possible.

Inclusion is what I am all about and focusing on the fact that Cycle Seahaven is a cycling club first and foremost. It’s all about the ride!

Youth Co-ordinator

Donna Turner

I have been with the club since 2017,and this will be my second year on the committee.

I joined the club after attending a Dr Bike session to get my bike checked before I rode the London to Brighton bike ride

As youth co-ordinator I would like encourage our younger members to get out on their bikes.

We have a Youth page on the website so if you have any stories or pictures of your rides them send them in. Also if you have any ideas of rides or events then contact me; look forward to hearing from you.

Happy and safe riding!

Clive Aberdour

I’ve been actively involved with the club since it was founded in 2009. I’m a founder member of Cycle Seahaven, was the club’s first secretary and have been a ride leader throughout. Also, I am editor of the club’s newsletter

It’s a pleasure to return to the committee to take on the task of maintaining the website; I have a similar role with Phoenix-CTC.

I have been involved with the running of cycling clubs for about thirty years and held various positions on club committees. including chairing a committee to organise fund raising bikeathons for a major charity. Therefore, I hope to use my experience to support the Cycle Seahaven committee in various ways as well as being the club’s webmaster.

My aims for 2021: to make the website more user friendly and easier to maintain.
